Britain names new MI5 chief: the spy who investigated 2018 Novichok attack

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain on Monday named Ken McCallum, a career spy who led the response to the attempted murder of Russian former double agent Sergei Skripal, as the new head of its MI5 domestic intelligence agency. McCallum, who has worked in MI5 for 25 years, rose through the ranks working across the agency’s main fronts from Northern Ireland to countering Islamist militants and ensuring the safety of the 2012 London Olympics. Then, after former Russian double agent Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found poisoned with a Soviet-developed nerve agent known as “Novichok” in 2018, McCallum led the agency’s response to the attempted murder, MI5 said. “Our people - with our partners - strive to keep the country safe, and they always want to go the extra mile,” McCallum said in a statement. “Having devoted my working life to that team effort, it is a huge privilege now to be asked to lead it,”

Russia Pushing Coronavirus Lies As Part of Anti-NATO Influence Ops in Europe

The pandemic has provided the Kremlin with an ample opportunity to target nervous populations with fake news. Russia is directing coronavirus-related disinformation at Eastern European audiences in a bid to drive anti-NATO sentiment among virus-spooked populations. The tactics range from the usual sort of anti-Western commentary on pro-Russian sites to hacking a legitimate news site to post a false story. A key target has been Lithuania, which sits between Russia’s client state Belarus and its exclave of Kaliningrad. In January, someone posted a false story on the Lithuanian news site kauno.diena.lt, or Kaunas Day, claiming that a U.S. soldier in Lithuania had COVID-19. (Since September, the country has hosted elements of the U.S. Army’s 1st Cavalry Division.) The story was up on the site for just a few minutes. “There is a case of hacking into a content management system. For the time

COVID-19 scuttles massive military drill in Europe, leaves Utah Army Reservists at home

The 807th Medical Command’s deployment to Defender-Europe 20 was canceled as the military tries to protect its forces from the coronavirus pandemic. SALT LAKE CITY — The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted a massive, multinational training exercise involving the large-scale deployment of U.S. troops — including a Utah-based Army Reserve unit — to defend Europe from a simulated invasion by a Russia-like adversary. Instead of mobilizing to Europe, soldiers from Salt Lake City’s 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support) Headquarters will remain stateside as the U.S. military attempts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus through its forces. Around 100 soldiers from the unit were slotted to deploy for the colossal exercise, the Army Times reported. Defender-Europe 20 — a mock, U.S.-led NATO action against an enemy of similar size and capabilities — would have been

CORONAVIRUS.

Conform acestor surse, adevărata omologă a apelului telefonic a

Pentagon orders halt overseas movement for U.S. military over COVID-19

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper has issued a stop movement order to the U.S. military halting travel and movement abroad for up to 60 days in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus through the ranks, the Pentagon chief told Reuters on Wednesday. The measure is by far the Defense Department's most sweeping to date and will affect forces around the world. Esper said in an interview that the order applied to all U.S. troops, civilian personnel and families, but noted that there would be some exceptions. "The purpose is to make sure that we're not bringing the virus back home, infecting others, that we're not spreading it around the military," Esper said.
